Training Session #1

Overview of AI and Tools

Time : March 15, 2024 – 4:00 PM (GMT +7)

Speaker

Dr. Mark Lipptrott

Mark is the Associate Head of the Computer Science Department.  He has a doctorate, a first class honours BSc in Information Systems, a PGCE in Higher Education Teaching and Learning Support, and a PGCE in Research Degree Supervision.  His doctorate analysed the relevance of diffusion theory on the voluntary adoption of technological innovations introduced through the public policy process.  His current research has shifted to focus on the adoption of e-initiatives and text analysis.  Mark has addressed conferences throughout Europe and has contributed to journals, including the UK Government Computing News Magazine, and readers on technology adoption.  He is an associate editor for the Journal of Information Technology and Citizenship and reviews for a number of other journals.

Training Session #2

AI opportunities in addressing SDGs

Time : April 04, 2024 – 4:00 PM (GMT +7)

Speaker

Professor Marcello Trovati

After having obtained his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Exeter in 2007, specialising in theoretical dynamical systems with singularities, he accepted a position as algorithm tester and research specialist at a medium sized software development company. His main responsibility was to create, test and documents state-of-the-art statistical algorithms to analyse big datasets.

He then moved to the newly created Dublin IBM Research Lab to carry out research mainly in the field of knowledge discovery, text mining, and mathematical modelling, where he gained valuable business and research experience through collaboration with several scientists both at IBM, and at academic institutions. He was involved in a number of research projects in collaboration with other IBM Research Centres and academic institutions

He then joined Coventry University to take up a position as Teaching Fellow, and subsequently the University of Derby as a lecturer, during which he was involved various multi-disciplinary projects focussing on mathematical modelling, algorithm design, and big data analytics.

In 2016 Marcello joined the Computer Science Department at Edge Hill University as a senior lecturer and he was subsequently recently awarded a Professorship in Computer Science.

Training Session #3

British Parliamentary Debate

Time : April 29, 2024 – 10:30 AM (GMT +7)

Speaker

Mr. Nicholas Collier
  • Learning Adviser
  • Learning and Teaching
  • Academic Division
  • The University of Newcastle
  • University Drive, Callaghan, NSW 2308, Australia

Nicholas is a Learning Advisor at the University of Newcastle, where he works with students on their academic language, writing and speaking skills during their studies. Before arriving in Newcastle in 2009, he taught English in Japan and Saudi Arabia, where he met every imaginable sort of student and covered every imaginable sort of material. If one job involved teaching medical vocabulary to hospital staff in the middle of the desert, another might involve teaching colours to kindergarten students in the middle of a high-rise city. Another might involve teaching modern literature to retirees, Japanese grammar to adult learners, or everything in between.

Born and raised in Australia, he has travelled widely in Asia, and speaks several languages (he tried learning Vietnamese three years ago, but wasn’t very good at it). Qualified in education, philosophy, linguistics, English literature and Indonesian history, he also writes and illustrates, and is known among his colleagues for travelling ridiculously long distances on foot. Before being asked to participate in Van Lang University’s debating tournament, he worked on presentation, public speaking and debating with students from many backgrounds.
